New oil painting

First - I hope everyone is enjoying the freedom today made possible by the men and women of our military - both past and present.  Thanks to all of you who protect us.  You're truly our heroes.

Here's my 2nd "daily" art thing.  Can you believe I missed the first day after my grand proclamation of posting some new art every Monday through Friday?  Well - we were having problems getting the blog published and I got all caught up in that venture.  That's just life - and I'm not going to sweat the small stuff.

I'm proud to show you my first oil painting in years!  My main medium is acrylics - very different properties than oils.  I'm taking a class at Artichokes - a great new art gallery/school.  (Check them out - www.artichokeskc.com)  This is titled "After Vlaminck" - one of my favorite artists with the Fauve movement.  Our first assignment was to "copy" a work and this is very similar to ("inspired by") one of Vlaminck's pieces.  I give him full credit for composition, color, etc.  It was a great exercise to study a master.  Because it's basically a copy, the price is less than a normal piece this size.  And it's signed on the back.  I plan to do more of this style but from my own photos or plein air experiences.

I thought this was a good painting to include on Memorial Day.  It may remind some older veterans of European scenes.

I'm also posting a better photo of the painting from my first blog.  I have so much to learn about image manipulation and control.  This photo was done by my photographer guru - Don Mason.  You can see why artists pay photographers to get a professional look!  Improving my own photography - another thing on my long "to do" list.   I started to wipe out the first blog entry and redo it with a better photo - but then I thought you'd enjoy observing the learning curve - the good, bad and ugly!!

We're off to a bbq at Al & Karen's - part of our new extended family in Kansas.  I hope each of you had a terrific and peaceful Memorial Day!
