In 1996, Mike and I spent a week at the Lawrence Welk Resort in the desert mountains of southern California - east of San Diego. Beautiful resort - really! We traded our time-share week and, naturally, we waited until the last minute to make the trade. All the trading places high on our wish list were not available, so we decided to give this a try. We were so pleasantly surprised! The condos really are first class. I had just started painting and I decided to spend a couple of days doing "plein air" painting - sounded so cool! This little painting is inspired by one that I did on this trip. - it was the view from one of our balconies - the road leading up to our condo. I was taking a class in acrylics - my first time to use acrylics - and I was working on an assignment to paint 100 black and white paintings. (????) I had done about 35 "black and white's", but - since I was on vacation - I decided to "cheat" and I bought some real colors!! At this phase I was just experimenting with brush strokes and the paints to get a feel for this medium. I was playing with loading the brush with lots of colors, quick brush strokes, adding some line work, etc. I like the freshness of some of those very loose and experimental paintings. This new painting is based on one from that trip, and is part of my current experiment with oils - going back to those "play days." I think the line work adds a little Oriental flare.
We have such great memories of the Lawrence Welk Resort. But one thing that lives in our memories - the local tv and radio stations played Lawrence Welk music all the time - and we only got the local stations. At first it was cute . . . . . Now we can laugh!
Have a beautiful day!

I agree with your assessment of the oriental flare...a very tranquil painting...I had no idea there was a Welk Resort! Bet the music finally drove you crazy!!
