Last weekend when our friend was here from Texas, we visited Powell Gardens in "Kansas City." It's actually about 40 minutes from K.C. but very much worth the drive. This place has many acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, ponds, yard sculptures, etc. I fell in love with so many flowers and got tons of ideas for our landscape-challenged yard. One of my favorite discoveries was a type of fountain grass with pink flowers. I had no idea what it was - or even that the "flowers" were called flowers (I thought they were fronds - duh), so I did a google search on "pink fountain grass" and - guess what - that's what it's called! (Also Pennisetum Alopecuroides but I can't even pronounce that.) Great - because I want to add these to our landscape!! Isn't life fun!
I don't think I'm finished with this painting but I'm quitting for the day. This is one that needs a little overnight pondering. It's close. And it's definitely an impressionistic interpretation of the photo from Powell Gardens. Impressionistic means (in part) that it's not exactly like the original inspiration - I at least accomplished that!!!! And "impressionism" connotes that the effects of light are being painted in the art. I have to think about this one. Anyway - it's a good start. But it's time to come up with other names than "Powell Gardens" because I believe I will be inspired many times over the years by the spectacular sights at this special place.
If you're still reading, please say a prayer or send good vibes or "whatever" for my aunt and uncle in Texas. It's been hard to concentrate today. Both are very ill - especially my aunt - and my thoughts have been with them and with their sons. Art is a wonderful "escape." I had a hard time getting started on my painting today - but when I did, I was totally lost. Then I realized it was late in the day and that I better get this painting on my blog!
Let's hope for a beautiful and healthy tomorrow for two beautiful people. And here's to a great evening for each of you, too.
Simply fabulous shades of beauty! Glad you have a new place to return for inspiration! Our prayers are with JP and Joyce and the boys. Love k
