Last night I painted with a group at the lake at Cedar Creek development, east of Kansas City.  This is my 4th painting from this general area.  During the whole drive out there, I thought I was nuts!  It rained - heavily - until I reached the turnoff for the development.  Most of the evening was overcast but we painted anyway.  You have to plan ahead with oils because they dry so slowly, so last night's painting was it for this show.  The composition was inspired by the landscape, but the colors are a lot brighter than we could see under the clouds.  Doesn't matter - I'd paint them more colorful anyway!  The bright yellow tree on the left really was a lot lighter than the other trees, so it's sort of true to nature.  Just before the sun set, the clouds cleared and the sky was absolutely gorgeous!  It's just a gift to paint outside in a beautiful place.

Six artists painted last night - all looking at the same sights - all with completely different styles and intererpretations.  That's one of my favorite things about art!  I remember the first painting class I took as an adult in 1995.  We did a "paint along" - we all painted with the instructor and he told us what brush to use - also what color, brushstroke, etc.  You must know that I was working with a lot of engineers - very linear thinkers (I love them anyway) - so I did just as the instructor said.  When I took a break to walk around the room, I was amazed!  One man had orange mountains!!!  None of the others in the room were quite as exactly like the instructors as mine was.  What a revelation!  Maybe that's why I like art so much - we all do our own thing, it may or may not look like it's "supposed" to look - and it doesn't matter a bit!

I hope you have a beautiful evening - whatever that means for you!
